How to Set Up IPTV on a Smart TV: Samsung, LG and Hisense

Your Smart TV can probably run IPTV without an extra stick. Here is how to find the right app for your brand, enter your details and fix the settings that matter.

If your television is less than about six years old, there is a good chance it can run IPTV on its own, with no stick or box plugged into the back. The catch is that every brand uses a different operating system, so the right app for a Samsung is not the same as the right app for an LG. This guide walks you through finding out what your TV runs, installing a player app and getting the picture right.

Before you start

  • Your TV’s model number. It is on a sticker on the back of the set, or in the settings menu under “About this TV” or “Support”.
  • Your login details or playlist link, which we send after you order or start a trial.
  • A software update. Run the TV’s update check first. Older firmware is the most common reason an app won’t install or crashes on launch.
  • Ideally, a network cable. Most Smart TVs have an Ethernet port, and plugging in removes most buffering problems.

Step 1: Find out which system your TV runs

The operating system decides which app store you have:

  • Samsung uses Tizen. Find the model under Settings › Support › About This TV.
  • LG uses webOS. Look under Settings › General › About This TV.
  • TCL and Hisense sell Google TV, Roku TV and (Hisense) VIDAA models, so check which system yours runs.
  • Sony and other Google TV sets give you the widest choice of apps, straight from Google Play.
  • Insignia and Toshiba Fire TV Edition sets work much like a Fire TV Stick. Roku TVs have very limited IPTV app support, so a plug-in stick is usually the better route.

Step 2: Install a player app

IPTV GOLD plays through a player app, which is a bit like a web browser built for TV channels. Open your TV’s app store, search for the app we recommend for your model and install it. App lineups change from time to time and differ by model year, which is why we ask for your model number before suggesting one.

Some player apps charge their own small one-off or yearly fee after a free period. That fee goes to the app developer and is separate from your IPTV GOLD plan. We will always tell you up front if the app we suggest has one.

Step 3: Add your details

Depending on the app, you will do one of three things:

  1. Enter a login: a server address, username and password. Type them exactly as sent, with no spaces at the end.
  2. Add a playlist link: a single long web address. Some apps let you add it from a phone or computer through the developer’s website, which saves typing with a remote.
  3. Activate by device ID: a few apps show a code or “MAC address” on screen. Send us that code and we activate it for you.

Give the app a minute to load the channel list and channel guide the first time. Later launches are much quicker.

Step 4: Settings that make a visible difference

  • Picture mode. “Movie”, “Cinema” or “Filmmaker” mode gives the most natural colors for movies. Use “Standard” for bright daytime sports.
  • Motion smoothing (Auto Motion Plus, TruMotion and similar). Many people prefer it off for movies and on, at a low level, for fast sports.
  • Energy saving. If the picture dims or the TV switches apps off in the background, turn the eco setting down.
  • Network. On Wi-Fi, make sure the TV is on your router’s 5 GHz network if it has one.

When a streaming stick is the better choice

On TVs older than around 2018, or sets with slow menus, a Fire TV Stick or Android box usually gives a smoother experience for very little money. Compare the options in our guide to compatible devices, or read the full Fire TV Stick guide.

Quick fixes

  • App not in the store: your model or region may not support it. Ask us for an alternative.
  • Endless loading: re-enter the server address carefully, then restart the TV at the wall.
  • Picture stutters on big events: switch to a network cable, or move the router closer.
